artist essay

This next artist that I view on the Art 21 series was Kara Walker. In her childhood years, she used chalk to create art. She was an African-American artist, who had many contriverial pieces about racial issues. She discussed these issues through her art work. Some of those where the idea’s of the deep south and slavery. For her art she made exhibitions of slioets that covered large white walls. They had a very cartoon feel to them that support the black stereotype for how slaves were seen. She used a overhead projector to project the silhouettes on the walls. She then used the overhead projector to splash moving color onto the wall.
I liked art work because she discusses important issues that should be acknowledged to people in their lives. I liked how she was comfortable with being African American and being so strong about an issue that once degraded her own race. I liked the fact that she used the overhead projector and used color to make her art more interesting and vibrant while bringing up important issues. I was interested in the way that she presented her artwork. She never beautified the subject, but showed it in its actual horror.

artist essay

the artist that I viewed in art 21 series was Andrea Zittel. Her childhood consisted of living in the suburbers. The common medium that she used was paint and scultupting. She felt that society was looking for something new. Many of her pieces that she made were pieces that were used in homes. She made her own clothes that were only made of rectangles. She wore one outfit for four months straight. She lived on an island that she made for a season or so. She believed in human values and preseptions in her work.
I really did not like her work because it made little sense to me. I respect her as an artist for her ability to express herself in the way she wants to, but at the same time, I do not understand how she could wear one piece of clothing for four months.

The artist that I viewed on art21 was Tim hawkinson. His form of medium that he used to produce his work I was known as mechanincal art. He used a digital camera to take pictures of people’s reactions to different unique sounds. Some of the music that he studied was music from church rythems. Some of the ways he formed sound was through water drops and building sculptures that were made out of large twisted plastic sheets that he assembled with a drill and mechanincal knowledge. He based an entire exibit of sound through pipes. He viewed that music was used as an escape for some people, like myself, as a form of relaxation.
I really liked this artist because he helped me out with my most recent project for my class. He gave me the idea to use music as an escape. Through that project i related my experience with music to how I have used it as an escape as well. It was creative how he used the plastic sheets to created different types of sounds and music. It was interesting to see the drill spun and formed the plastic tubes.

Comics are seen as a low art, having established as a form in the late 19th and early 20th century. Whilst preceding works have are seen as sharing certain techniques, most notably the conveying of a narrative through imagery, most commentators are agreed that the form was established in the the humorous cartoons and comic strips found in newspapers and magazines of the late 19th and early 20th century, and was fuelled by the boom in publishing technology. Early precursors include Trajan's Column and the Bayeaux Tapestry, as well as works by William Hogarth, Rodolphe Töpffer, Wilhelm Busch and George Cruikshank. Discussion of the form is even more recent, especially in the United States; although early criticism can be traced back to the 1920s, it is only in the latter half of the 20th century that serious examination of the form was begun. Definitions of the form are rather loose in their approach; some claim its printed format is crucial, some emphasize the interdependence of image and text, and others the sequential nature of the images.

Drawing is a visual art which makes use of any number of drawing instruments to mark a two-dimensional medium. Common instruments include graphite pencils, pen and ink, inked brushes, wax color pencils, crayons, charcoals, chalk, pastels, markers, stylus, or various metals like silverpoint. An artist who practices or works in drawing may be referred to as a draftsman or draughtsman.
A small amount of material is released onto the two dimensional medium which leaves a visible mark - the process is similar to that of painting. The most common support for drawing is paper, although other materials such as cardboard, plastic, leather, canvas and board, may be used. Temporary drawings may be made on a blackboard or whiteboard, or indeed almost anything. The medium has also become popular as a means of public expression via graffiti art, because of the easy availability of permanent markers.
Drawing is a form of visual expression and is one of the major forms within the visual arts. There are a number of subcategories of drawing, including cartooning, and certain drawing methods or approaches, such as "doodling," may or may not be considered as part of "drawing" as a "fine art."
In simplistic terms, drawing is distinct from painting, perhaps more so in the Western view; East Asian art, which generally only uses brushes, has historically made less distinction between the two. Critics may praise a painter's ability to draw well, meaning that the shapes, especially of the human body, are well-articulated, or a drawing may be considered painterly.

A collage (From the French: coller, to glue) is a work of art, primarily in the visual arts, made from an assemblage of different forms, thus creating a new whole. Use of this technique made its dramatic appearance among oil paintings in the early 20th century as an art form of groundbreaking novelty.
An artistic collage work may include newspaper clippings, ribbons, bits of colored or hand-made papers, portions of other artwork, photographs, and such, glued to a piece of paper or canvas. Techniques of collage were first used at the time of the invention of paper in China around 200 BC. The use of collage, however, remained very limited until the 10th century in Japan, when calligraphers began to apply glued paper, using texts on surfaces, when writing their poems. The technique of collage appeared in medieval Europe during the 13th century. Gold leaf panels started to be applied in Gothic cathedrals around the 15th and 16th centuries. Gemstones and other precious metals were applied to religious images, icons, and also, to coats of arms.
In the 19th century, collage methods also were used among hobbyists for memorabilia.

Artist Essay: Pepon Osorio

The artist i viewed for the Art:21 was Pepon Osorio. He was a contemporary artist, who made live scenes as his art. He was Puerto Rican and had and African Descent. At one point of his life, Pepon Osorio was a social worker. His artwork was very family oriented. His pieces that he showed was everyday living environments mixed in a history of a family. A large part of his work is his Latino heritage. The recent piece was a homage to his father. It featured a barbershop where his father used to work. He was afraid of getting his hair cut and had been terrified there after since. It is called “scene of a crime” it is supposed to be sacred. It had a lot of caution tape, broken glass, and broken dreams. There were many family pictures presented around the various rooms. The pictures told stories of his happy childhood and what the outcome was later in his life.
Overall I enjoyed this artist because he step outside the box and was not something you saw every day, something you could interact with, and you could get the full effect.

The art I have chosen is a dimensional mind trip. The color contrasts seem to fit well with the side walk color since every detail around the drawer has to be taken into effect. I like the colors because it gives in a space like feel. The visual arts are art forms that focus on the creation of works which are primarily visual in nature, such as painting, photography, printmaking, and filmmaking. Those that involve three-dimensional objects, such as sculpture and architecture, are called plastic arts. Many artistic disciplines (performing arts, language arts, and culinary arts) involve aspects of the visual arts as well as other types, so these definitions are not strict. The current usage of the term "visual arts" includes fine arts as well as crafts, but this was not always the case. Before the Arts and Crafts movement in Britain and elsewhere at the turn of the 20th century, "visual artist" referred to a person working in the fine arts (such as painting, sculpture, or printmaking) and not the handicraft, craft, or applied art disciplines. Overall, this was a good picture.

Artist Essay: Sally Mann

The artist that I viewed while watching Art: 21 was Sally Mann. Sally Mann is a photographer who has done a lot of her work in southern states such as Alabama, Mississippi, Virginia, and Georgia. She has done many landscapes, but also uses random objects and her children in her work. When she was growing up, she was known as the "wild child" for being carefree. She was the one who valued history and learned from it. She respected where she came from. Her art was intended on being odd and a little weird, but she liked it that way. She enjoyed photographing her kids in the nude. The pictures were seen as innocent and just something that any normal kids would do. She got a lot of negative feedback for her photo decisions because of photographing nude children. She had no "sick" intention with her ideas, she just used her kids because they were present.

I liked the idea of Sally Mann's art, even though she was a nut, but an artist as well. She basically did what any artist did by pushing the buttons of society and making an audience question her own personal ideas.

For the "history of art," I chose a piece by Claude Monet titled "San Giorgio Maggiore by Twilight." The colors in this piece are bright, but soft at the same time. For his time, Monet was and is still considered one of the greatest impressionistic artists of all time. He had a new use of color with vibrance that spread all over his canvas, but did it enough that it wasn't overpowering. It is obviously an impressionistic piece, but the contrast between colors makes it stand out a lot more than any other piece I have seen. Most of Monet's other pieces are a more soft and easy to look at. This piece has an edgy feel because of its dark colors. There is dominace with the castle on the left hand side, a small building on the right, and a medium reflection underneath the castle. This piece does not feature a human form. I have been encouraged, after this piece to experiment with more styles that I haven't tried before.

The next piece that could show Visual Culture could be Andy Warhol's rendition of Marilyn Monroe. He used many bright colors for each piece he did of this particular picture. He is a founding artist of the term "pop art" which his art was focused on pop culture during his life. This work is very well known, as well as most of his pieces, but people connect with this one because of it being Marilyn Monroe. The Marilyn print takes up the whole canvas to be the focal point. Because it is a photo print the human proportions are mostly accurate. I am a big Monroe fan, therefore I am automatically drawn to the piece. I have been influenced to do art with pop culture because it is one of my main interests.

This piece is for Fashion Design. The colors used for this piece were basically used to plan out what the clothing would look like, in general, if it was finished. Cool colors are used for this piece. There is shading with the colored pencil to show the effect of the clothing. The form is taking up most of the page to get the full effect. The human form is proportionate because it is used to accurately display clothing. I haven't really been influenced by this piece, but it does make me want to try new things.

The image I have chosen is a Coca-Cola bottle that is drawn on the side walk but shaded to look three dimensional. The color contrasts seem to fit well with the side walk color since every detail around the drawer has to be taken into effect. Julian Beever has made pavement drawings for over ten years. He has worked in the United Kingdom., Belgium, France, The Netherlands, Germany, the United States of America and Australia. The artist is known as the sidewalk chalk guy who goes to random cities, mostly New York and draws on the side walk to make a life like creation. The bottle is done to make it look as real as possible and I think that was achieved . The pavement drawings have included both renderings of old masters plus a wealth of original inventive pieces of work. Anamorphic illusions drawn in a special distortion in order to create an impression of 3 dimensions when seen from one particular viewpoint. Over all, I thought this was a good drawing it takes some time and a lot of techniques to make this look as life like as it does. The way it seems to come to life makes someone wonder how it was done.

Image Essay #5

The painting I have chosen is a multiple array of paintings that all seem to relate to each other in some ways. One way that they are all related are the colors, they all seem to follow the same color balances, it is also kept darker which makes the painting more mysterious. They all seem to follow the same texture patterns. They all compliment each others by facial expressions or a depth of sadness. There is not any negative space in the painting and if there is it is used with some relevance to the other pictures in the painting. It is drawn with wider definite lines that catch ones attention when looking directly at the piece. In this piece of art there is a definite texture in painting stimulates two different senses. This makes it a unique element of art. Over all, I like this work of art it has a look as if it is windy or a breeze is going through the painting, it gives it a tropical feel. Maybe the artist was not trying to make them all match but in my opinion I like they way the compliment each other. It is a unique style the artist has to create this type of work.

The painting I have chosen is just a piece of work that was created in an hour, using multiple colors and textures. I like this because it wasn’t something that was planned out or drawn out it was something that just happened. It is a free painting, I like the color choices they are warm colors that give the painting a sense of variety. There is a ton of negative space but it some how makes this painting work. It is dark and has a sense that just fades as one looks down. It is a simple but technical design; that artist seems satisfied with it even though it was simple most artists would just be disappointed with what they created and go over it again and again so the colors would blend through. These are raw colors which capture the eye. Over all, I think this is a good painting, it is just unique and does not have meaning so that makes it exciting. The textures in this are many brush strokes on top of each other to create the look of multiple layers and a lot of hard work. Which also makes it something to look at and makes it creative.

The painting I has chosen is a tree struggling to break free. I like this piece of art because of how it has the appearance that it is going to just come right off the canvas. It reminds me of someone struggling to break free as they are growing since the tree is smaller. In this piece of art there is a definite texture in painting stimulates two different senses. This makes it a unique element of art. It makes one think of how this could separate into two different varieties. The pigment of the background color slightly contrasts with the color of the tree which makes it seem to come more alive since they are almost the same color but it is slightly darkened to show an effect in contrast. This is a landscape painting to an extent with the fact of a surreal tree, but with there isn’t a continuation of the on the scene. Everything in the painting seems to blend very well and compliment each other. Overall I think it is a good painting in my eyes it represents a something that needs to be free and branch off of itself and create some other work of art.

The image I have chosen is a digital eye. This piece shows a square texture with a futuristic effect. It gives the person looking at a multi-dimensional feel. It makes it seem that you are looking at it in many senses, you could look at it eight different ways or not more to make it look different. The depth of this photograph is amazing it captures some one looking at it; like a trap. With showing the human eye its gives the person looking at it a sense of confusion which becomes the area of focus in this piece. It eye is one of the first things I see when I look at it really explodes. The proportion of colors in this seem to rotate in a pattern that somehow balance the eye itself. Digital compositing is the process of digitally assembling multiple images to make a final image, typically for print, motion pictures or screen display; this work of art displays the colors. The image is multiple images in itself to compose one piece. It incorporates many color levels and contrasts to makes it something to look at. Overall, I believe it is something that would catches ones eye per say, into like this piece of art.

The image I have chosen is a silhouette of couple dancing in a projected background . This piece shows human relationship through a sense of color choices with balance of light and dark colors. This work has a selective focus through the camera angles. They do not show any facial expression. Silhouettes are most often made by a skilled silhouette artist by looking at a subject's profile, whether in person or from a photograph, and simply cutting out their likeness freehand. With the silhouettes blended into the background it catches ones eye with how intense the background is, but still gives you a sense of a passion between the couple. A (digital) color image is a
digital image that includes color information for each pixel. For visually acceptable results, it is necessary (and almost sufficient) to provide three samples (color channels) for each pixel, which are interpreted as coordinates in some color space. The RGB color space is commonly used in computer displays, but other spaces such as YCbCr, HSV, and are often used in other contexts. Overall, I like this picture because of how it is displayed, I also like how everything is eye catching and makes one think about how the artist captured this moment.

I believe that we as people can define a place, but a place can also define us. It depends on how the person looks at it. We make our opinions of places depending how we see them, but the place is what makes us have opinions. Many of the artists in the Art: 21 series relate certain places into their artwork. They are usually places they have lived at or have had an important meaning to them. The Artist that I thought represented this well was Pepon Osorio. He contributed a barbershop scene and house into his work that represented his life growing up. It was interesting because a lot of family pictures were shown. There were many different places that had an affect on me when I was younger. Some of those places were my room, my grandparents house, closets, basements, and my grandparents barn. My room: Comfort, Grandparents house: Fun, Closets: Exploring, Basements: Playing, Grandparents barn: scared. One of those places I could describe is Closets. My grandparents upstairs closet was a pretty big room that had many random objects. Besides years of old clothes that had been passed from kid to kid, there was a countless amount of board games and stuffed animals. I remember feeling like i could get lost if I went back in too far because of all the covering clothes and stuff.
I think stories that are passed down from family are important because it actually affects you as a person. It gives you guidance on how to live life. I would make it an important story that people in my family could learn from and would give the idea of respect to value.
Some stories are told because they are something positive and reassuring to some. Stories that are passed down from generation to generation usually have some sort of morals that someone is trying to get across. If the story lacks meaning it will not be passed on or shared because it will hold no interest.
I believe that sketchbooks aren't really a work of art, but insteasd, they are used to form and build art. Journals and sketchbooks are used for brainstorming a final project. Journals are used to put thoughts into a final writing. Sketchbooks are used to visually put an idea on paper that could be used for a final project.
When I was 5 I didn't have a care in the world. My life was all about imagination and playing with the neighborhood kids. I remember the daily outside time was a must and the cartoons were always on. I remember starting out drawing and realizing that I had more talent that what I had noticed. Now, I feel like I have lost the innocence of everything that a 5 year old has. You understand reality and accept it. You wish that you could still not have a care in the world, but know that it will never happen again until you retire.

Blog #2 Part 2

The image that I am writing about is my blog buddy's first assignment, the circle, rectangle, and line project. She does a good job representing dominance in shapes and negative space. For our projects, we both used images that described ourselves. Hers, however, is a lot more easier to understand, than mine. I like the variety of pictures that are used. It clearly shows her personality and interests, as well. I think that if she mixed the objects together more and not kept them to the sides, it would be more visually appealing. I learned later on that the objects need to "party," as well as the shapes to be from the sizes of the crumb of a french fry to a dump truck. That is also what my piece lacked.

Her images are what make the piece interesting. I think that if there wasn't so many different pictures it wouldn't be so busy, but they help the piece and and you get a full understanding of what she is all about. I think that she did a better job than what I did. It is an overall good piece, for what the assignment required. I now have a better understanding of the concept of what the circle, rectangle, and line is about.

The first piece for 2-D Foundations that I was assigned to do was the circle, line, and rectangle. This piece was supposed to represent the importance of dominance in size of shapes and in negative space as well. We started out with black construction paper and cut out shapes of circles, rectangles, and lines, making them various sizes. We then placed them on white paper and put them in spots throughout the page to show dominance in size and negative space. For the final, we were to use pictures from magazines and such to show who we were, but still have the impression of varied dominant shapes.

For my final, I chose to do use pictures to represent my life and me transitioning into college. I used two national banks to show myself having to change banks when leaving for college. This was supposed to represent a change. The banks also represent my forgetfulness because I have, on a few occasions left my ATM/Debit card in the machines and have had to get a new one, every time. The eye balls are supposed to represent that I have an astigmatism, in which means I have glasses that I don't wear.

This piece really didn't turn out the way I had wanted it to. I really didn't have much of an understanding of the assignment, resulting in me receiving a not so great grade. I definitely put too much of a symbolic thought into this piece, meaning that the audience had a hard time understanding what it was about. This assignment seemed like it would have been simple, but I struggled with the technical aspect of it.

How long and for what reason have you made art?

I have been producing art for as long as I have been in school. I remember that when I was in kindergarten, I think so at least, my parents noticed that I had an artistic talent. As soon as they realized that I had a skill in the art field, they took advantage of it, by enrolling me in art classes and lessons through organizations and people in the community. With lessons and having experienced guidance, I have been able to obtain many different ideas and techniques that have been helpful when producing various pieces of art. When I got into the high school art classes, I attended Columbus College of Art and Design's Saturday Morning Art Classes, where I studied various forms of drawing and painting. I also participated in CCAD's Summer College PreView Program, where I stayed in the dorms for two weeks and took a few "college" courses that were supposed to help me get an idea for a future career to study. This was a beneficial program to participate in because of it's focus on adjusting to a college setting, socially and academically.

The reason I make art is because it is something that I enjoy and am aware that it is something that I am capable of. I enjoy producing things that are visually appealing to look at. I like abstract and realistic subjects. I feel that I have to produce art because it is something that I was given to do and it wouldn't be right to not use something, that not everyone is capable of doing. I produced a lot more art when I was younger for fun because I had more "free time." Today, I produce art because it is something required for my classes. It isn't something that I am putting it on the "back burner," but I don't really have much time to myself now, to produce what art I want to.
